CA 15-3 is a high molecular weight glycoprotein.

Malignancies with elevated levels:
Elevated in 80% of women with advanced metastatic breast cancer. Rarely elevated in patients with local breast cancer. May also be high in other adenocarcinomas, especially with distant metastasis.

Benign diseases with elevated levels:
Benign liver disease, hypothyroidism, sarcoidosis, possibly benign breast disease.

Main clinical applications:

This marker should only be requested in patients with known breast cancer.

  1. Monitoring treatment in patients with advanced breast cancer.
  2. For detecting recurrences in patients with diagnosed breast cancer. The clinical value of this practice is unknown.
