a) 2 x sterile universal containers, plus (if Spontaneous Bacterial Peritonitis (SBP) or CAPD peritonitis is supected) b) A set of blood culture bottles (green and purple caps) |
How to take specimen | Special collection according to local protocols. Asceptic technique is essential. |
Volume | Approximately 20 ml into each universal container In addition 5 - 10 ml is innoculated in to each blood culture bottle If TB is suspected then it is necessary to send a further sample (approximatley 20ml in a sterile universal container) and label the request form accordingly |

Transport to the laboratory | Immediately
Out of hours blood culture bottles can be placed in a 37oC incubator |
Turnround | Results of cell count and gram stain will be reported within one hour of receipt of specimen. Culture results 48hrs but up to 5 days if further work is required |
