| How to take specimen | Special collection according to local protocols. Asceptic technique is essential. |
| Volume | Approximately 20 ml into each universal container In addition 5 - 10 ml is innoculated in to each blood culture bottle If TB is suspected then it is necessary to send a further sample (approximatley 20ml in a sterile universal container) and label the request form accordingly |

| Turnround | Results of cell count and gram stain will be reported within one hour of receipt of specimen. Culture results 48hrs but up to 5 days if further work is required |
