Notes: When investigating patients with suspected anaphylaxis, paired samples (the first taken as soon as possible after the onset of symptoms, the second at least 6 hours later) can be useful in confirming that mast cell activation has occurred. A persistently elevated mast cell tryptase suggests the possibility of systemic mastocytosis.
