Synovial Fluid Specimen Requirements

1. ? SEPTIC ARTHRITIS - Microscopy and Culture for bacterial pathogens (Bacteriology); blood cultures should also be taken. (See also under GONORRHOEA re. the GCFT);
2. ? CRYSTAL SYNOVITIS - polarising light microscopy for urate and pyrophosphate crystals (Bacteriology).
   (Note that histopathology will also look for crystals).
