Noroviruses, or "winter vomiting virus" are the most common cause of gastroenteritis in the UK. The viruses are highly infectious with sudden onset of symptoms and outbreaks can easily occur in semi-closed environments such as hospitals and nursing homes.

Additional information Norovirus samples need to arrive in the laboratory before 9am for testing the same day.
